2009 Manteca Youth Focus Teen Scholarship Competition

By Justin Swofford

The second day of competition in the Manteca Youth Focus Teen Scholarship Competition yielded tears and applause from audience members as they watched friends and family give it their all for the big prize.

This year’s theme was “All-Star Round-Up.” At the top of the show, the youth contestants sang and danced to a group performance of “Me and My Gang.”

The first stage of the competition was the Community Service phase. Each competitor explained how he or she would work as part of the All-Star team to make the city of Manteca a better place.

In the 2nd phase of competition, “Stage Arts,” each contestant was to present a special talent. Acts included Dalton Harris giving a demonstration on rifle exhibition, as well as Lathrop’s 13 year-old Marissa Candelaria, who sang and danced to “Be Our Guest.”

Next came the public speaking portion of the competition. Each contestant was given thirty seconds to answer random questions in a press conference-like format. When contestant
Victoria Watson of Sierra High was asked why she chose to compete in the show, she answered, “It’s a great opportunity to learn life skills. It doesn’t matter if you win, because everyone has fun.”

And everyone did just that as they watched Myklyn Grace Balmut, Miss Teen Manteca 2008, give a farewell performance of “Colors of the Wind” on piano. Afterward, past title holders were presented, and Matthew Vaughan, who also served as emcee, presented the judges’ results.

The titles awarded to the finalists were as follows:

Manteca Teen Ambassador: Dalton Harris (Sierra High School)
Miss Teen Manteca: Victoria Watson (Sierra High School)
Miss Teen: Winterfest Marissa Candelaria (Lathrop School)
Miss Teen Pumpkin Fair: Jordan Renfro (East Union High School)
