Kids are Quick to Collect Candy

By: Jacqui Lloyd

Gabe Goulart and his entire staff successfully orchestrated another fun filled seasonal event
for Lathrop youth which was held a Sangalang Park this year. The location change didn’t seem
to affect the number participants who eagerly gathered around the pitchers mound to listen to
Gabe’s opening speech where he introduced Mayor Kristy Sayles, Miss Lathrop Kristina
Candelaria, and Ambassador to Lathrop Chris Navalta. The 2008 Giant Candy Egg Hunt was
sponsored by the City of Lathrop along with Ghirardelli Chocolate who just opened its first
Central Valley location in Lathrop.

Everyone was divided into 4 age groups and assigned different activities traditionally part of
Spring Fun Day which came before the main attraction including parachute games, tug o’ war,
sack races, and the egg toss. The grass at the park was in good condition and the surface
was even and well maintained. There was plenty of open field to accommodate everyone and
the spacious blue sky displayed magnificent cloud formations throughout the day. The wind
chill didn’t seem to bother girls wearing Easter dresses or anyone really because the kids
weren’t focusing on the weather – they were thinking about candy eggs while patiently
waiting for the Spring Bunny to appear so that the egg hunt could begin.

Parents who came equipped with cameras tried to hand their children over to the Spring Bunny
so they could capture a Kodak moment but many young kids weren’t very considerate to their
dedicated parents and put up a struggle in the process! Well, there’s always next year. While
the big fluffy rabbit distracted the crowds, Gabe, his staff, and members of the Youth Advisory
Commission scattered the treasured candy eggs evenly across the hunting grounds with
extreme precision. When each group was given the green light, the kids moved with lightning
speed to grab the goodies and it was over before it started. Children certainly move fast when
sweets are involved. Too bad their energy levels aren’t as high when doing homework
assignments!
