A Surrell Success Story

By Jacqui Lloyd
Gerome Surrell age 17 was born July 4, 1990 in Stockton, California. He has lived in Lathrop all
his life - first attending Lathrop Elementary for 3 years and then transferring to Manteca
Christian School until his 8th grade graduation. Gerome started playing football in Manteca for
the Cowboys, then the Chargers, when President of the Lathrop Titans, Jaime Hernandez
noticed his athletic abilities and wanted him to play for the Lathrop Titans. Coach Torres
recruited Gerome who ended up having 2 great seasons for the Titans including playing
All-Stars and receiving MVP awards.

Coach Torres recommended to Gerome that he attend St. Mary’s High School in Stockton
because of its excellent academic program and successful athletic program. He helped Gerome
Surrell get a scholarship at St. Mary’s where he played JV football before becoming a 3-year
starter on the Varsity football team. Under Rams Coach Tony Franks, Gerome earned many
awards such as 1st team All-League, 1st team All-Area, and 1st team All-State, Most
Outstanding Sophomore Athlete Award in 2005-2006, Scholastic Athletic Achievement Award
in 2006-2007, and Best Offensive Back in 2007. Gerome hauled in 37 receptions for 837 yards
and 9 TD’s plus he returned a punt and a kick off for scores in 2007. As a Junior, he had 34
receptions for 776 yards and 6 TD’s.

However, it was in his Sophomore year at the Stanford Combine game in Sacramento where
UNLV coach Mike Sanford first had his eye the “speedy athlete from St. Mary’s who has
game-breaking abilities as both a wide receiver and kick returner”. The University of Nevada
Las Vegas offered Gerome Surrell a full 5-year scholarship for football in which he accepted
and will attend UNLV next year. Gerome Surrell who was considered to be one of California’s
top wide receivers by scouts around the United States is expected to provide a big boost to
the Rebel’s return game.

Gerome Surrell has consistently been on the Honor Roll from 3rd grade to 12th grade as his
success as and athlete and student goes hand in hand. At age 17, his accomplishments are
amazing and deserve much respect. Gerome is a winner who remains down to earth even with
his ultimate goal of being drafted into the NFL. He is an individual who defines every aspect of
what is expected in a role model and for this should be very proud. Like the influences in his
life (his mom, coaches, etc) many of the youth in Lathrop who need guidance could benefit
from hearing him speak about how he was able to stay on the right track. Congratulations
Gerome Surrell!

Letter from the Publisher (Frank Cavaco): Gerome was also a Lathrop Boys & Girls Club member
when I was the Club Director. He exuded sportsmanship and teamwork. He participated in
flag-football and basketball as a member of the Club.

The most important thing I noticed was the great relationship between Gerome and his mother
Kisha. Kisha made a point of keeping Gerome focused on academics and athletics. Gerome was
blessed to have a mother that really guided him in a positive direction.

His dedication, motivation and definitely his talent will take him where he wants to be.
