Volunteers Are Beautiful

By Jacqui Lloyd

Hats off to all of the wonderful volunteers who gave up their Saturday morning to help out
with Lathrop Beautification Day! Gabe Goulart and the staff of the Parks and Recreation
Department served breakfast to all of the participants at the Senior Center before assigning
them to the three work parties planned for the day. Boy Scout Troop 425 led by Chad Edwards
and Cub Scout Troop 425 led by Tamara Edwards spread new bark in the playground at
Sangalang Park. Also in that area, the Lathrop Sunrise Rotary including George Jackson, Toni
and Jamie Hernandez (Parks and Recreation Commissioner) and Jon Serafin of Lathrop
Chiropractic, planted shrubs and trees. The Public Works Department was on hand to cone off
work areas to ensure safely and to lend a helping hand when needed.

The most challenging job of Beautification Day was painting the wall at Woodfield Park. Kristina
Candelaria (Miss Lathrop) and her sister Marissa along with many volunteers spent hours
painting until the paint ran out! Parks and Recreation Commissioner Walter Nobrega brought his
son and two nephews to participate and after digging in the dirt, they were ready to rescue
Dawn Moreno, leader of Girl Scout Troop 2127 and her crew who were overwhelmed by the
difficulty of the painting assignment. John Rock who is running for City Council stopped to say
hello. Last year he and his wife volunteered to paint Lathrop Elementary School and knowing
what a tough job painting can be, he admired their efforts.

Also at the wall were the Gills whose mom worked at the community center. They heard about
the event and wanted to help out Gabe. Edy and Rachel Herrera have lived in Lathrop for
about a year and jumped at the opportunity to help out because they participated in similar
events in the Bay Area and wanted to continue volunteering in their new community. Loredana
Kremerskotter and her four children came to help with improving the Lathrop community. She
works at Joseph Widmer School as a teacher’s aid and yard duty and will see the newly
painted wall every day. Last but not least, Frank Cavaco, publisher of the Lathrop RUSH,
spent the morning painting instead of reporting. Special thanks to Mrs. Candelaria for making
sure all of the volunteers who were still painting at lunchtime got sandwiches and drinks.
