Stepping Up to the Plate For 2008
By: Justin Swofford
You know when it is Spring in Lathrop for, baseball fans, parents, and players alike join in a
grand kick-off ceremony for the Lathrop Little League's newest season.
In accordance with yearly tradition, each of this year's teams was introduced and stood by
while the Little League staff, (headed by President Sabrina Nunes,) proceeded with the
formalities.
Among the activities was the presentation of colors by Lathrop's local Boy Scout Troop, as
well as the singing of the National Anthem by Lathrop Little Leaguer and Manteca Youth Focus
alum Gabriel Castellanos.
Lathrop Elementary School Principal David Silveira took part in the first pitch of the season,
and raffle prizes were also given out as an incentive for pre-season fundraising.
The entire team of parents, kids, coaches, and sponsors eagerly await another riveting ball
season. However, the 2008 season is also one of impending challenges, one of which is the
ongoing construction projects at Valverde Park, the League's stomping grounds. While some
claim that construction could cease as early as mid-summer, others dispute this estimate,
suggesting that the project will not see completion until as late as winter. Nonetheless, the
League will play on in the face of this challenge, and is expected to play occasionally at
Sangalang Park.
Lathrop Little League was founded by Frank Cavaco in 1989 he is also the owner of our local
publication The Lathrop RUSH.
This year's new Board of Directors is as follows:
Sabrina Nunes: President; Registrar
Yvette Sharisnejad: Team Parent Coordinator
Tony Castro: Vice President, Umpire and Chief
Dan Koenig: Information Officer
Richard Rallios: Ways and Means
Rhonda Rallios: Secretary and Treasurer
Sebastian Nunes: Minor B and Tee Ball
Chuck Garcia: Equipment Manager
Mary Jo Cantu: Player Agent
The League would like to thank the many sponsors who have contributed to making this year's season the best ever. Good luck and have fun!
