Lathrop High School - A Dream Come True

By Jacqui Lloyd

David Chamberlain has dreamed for many years to open up
a brand-new high school and on June 3, 2008 his dream will
become a reality. On this day, the doors of Lathrop High School will
officially open for business with Principal David Chamberlain proudly leading the way. He
states, “It’s been a long time coming and Lathrop High School will be an exciting place to be!”
As the first Principal, he plans on using the approach “Failure is not an option” from a book
written by Alan Blankstein about the six principles that guide student achievement in high
performing schools.

Mr. Chamberlain had previously been the principal of Livermore High School from 2005-2007
when he was interviewed for his current position. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Technology
Education and Spanish from Southern Utah University and a Master’s degree in Educational
Administration from the California State University of San Bernardino. He is very enthusiastic
about Lathrop having it’s first high school and the positive impact it will have on the Lathrop
community. He has been working on the crest, which is still a draft and may be fine-tuned. It
includes much of the community’s heritage: the Mossdale bridge, the Delta, a locomotive, and
sheaves of wheat in addition to the books representing education.

Lathrop High is home of the Spartans wearing black and gold as the school colors.
Approximately 500 students consisting of freshmen (class of 2012) and sophomores (class of
2011) will start classes on August 11th bright and early at 7:25 am and they will be on a block
schedule. There will be a strong focus in the area of Agriculture due to the school’s location,
which enabled it to receive a California state grant-prop 1-d. There will also be a strong music
program with choir and band included. One unique feature is an outside theater, which will
accommodate an audience of around 399 people. As for the staff, Principal Chamberlain
describes them as a good mixture of young and old or to be politically correct, a balance of
experienced teachers along with new teachers who all are eager to be working at Lathrop High
School.
