Jammin’ James & his Winning Pitch

The Lathrop Sunrise Rotary held it’s third annual Pitching Clinic at Sangalang Park where

approximately 30 children ranging from 5 to 14 years of age joined former Chicago Cubs pitcher

Jammin’ James in an afternoon of fun. Each participant received a free hat, T-shirt and

baseball and all were anxious to hear what Jammin’ James had to say. After he introduced

himself, Jammin’ James discussed what it takes to become a major league baseball player. He

also stressed how saying no to drugs and alcohol will significantly improve one’s life and how

he had to learn the hard way.

Jammin’ James conveyed the importance of full body stretching exercises and talked about

how pitchers of all ages can instantly increase the speed of a pitch by focusing on using their

whole body instead of just their arm. He continued to explain why building momentum into a

long stride is the secret to controlling a ball with less stress to one’s throwing arm. All of the

kids received a one on one pitching lesson from James who gave advice to everyone on how

to improve their game.

Afterwards, the Fugate family served barbequed hot dogs to participants and their families.

The children then lined up to get Jammin’ James’ autograph on their baseballs which they

proudly got to take home. Lathrop Sunrise Rotary member Leroy Griffith is very pleased about

the positive impact the pitching clinic has on young people and commends James for being

available each year to serve as a role model who helps point kids in the right direction.
